Paulina & Milva And Another Walk

Thursday: udt, taking Tinker out for the ferrier
Friday: liberty 25min, weave pattern, figure 8, stick to me, spin
Paulina, Marie, Milva and I took another walk today. We walked the same round as last time just this time Marie was walking as well and not riding. It took us exactly 60min of nonstop walking.
Milva was doing super well. She was calm for most of the time. There were a few little thresholds, mostly when we had to walk by a farm or a house but with Lina taking the lead is was no real problem. And it wasn´t that she got scarred it was mostly stopping and looking and waiting if Lina gets eaten or not. But she never hesitated when I asked her to follow me.
At some parts of our walk she was so relaxed that she started to play touch-it by herself again, taking every little plastic bit or paper in her mouth to show me. She really cracks me up with her ideas.
Traffic doesn´t seem to be a big issue. I´m not saying she is traffic save yet but it´s not a big deal for her either. We met several cars, a biker and some big farm machines.
On our way home we had to pass a big farm with lots of chunk and machines outside. I had to prevent Milva of checking out all the chunk. She got a little bit upset because I wouldn´t let her go in and refused to walk on. Probably she was thinking she could earn alots of cookies by sniffing everything in there cause that´s what we do at home. Too funny!
Tomorrow we are going up north to Örebro to pick up an airplane. I have never been up that far north in Sweden and I´m pretty excited about the trip. I´m going to check on Milva when we get back in the evening.

9th Ride & Liberty & Online

25min online, 15min liberty, 10min freestyle
Online we played with transitions again and trotting figure 8s using the 45´rope.
Milva gave me two nice trot - canter transitions but didn´t maintain the gate. "Rome"
Trotting figure 8s went well. A few more times and I will try it at liberty.
Liberty was so much fun again. I totally love her concentrated face. I´m going to ask Patricia to film me this weekend. Weavepatterns went well, but I just did it twice to keep her interest - not like yesterday were I lost her mentally cause she got so bored with me.
Figure 8s were going fine as well. Close range circles were non existing though. She trifted away from me and started to back up instead or came sideways towards me. So either I wasn´t clear in my bodylanguage and confused her or she just didn´t feel for it. I also started to play with the spin again.
Oh and while I played online with her Malin came in to fix some stuff in the ridinghouse. I stayed focused though and so did Milva and she kept circling like Malin wasn´t even there. Nice!
After our little playsession I took Milva back and saddled her. I think I have to reshim the pad this weekend. Back in the ridinghouse I played stick to me at liberty with her and mirroring. Everything went well and she looked rideable to me so I mounted her.
First I was a bit tensed because no one was with me but then I thought I just look how it goes and how she reacts. I tried to be aware of every little threshold - hers and mine but actually there were none. Definitely none on Milva´s side and mine dissapeared watching her. She stood very nicely when I mounted her, with her head down and totally relaxed. She waited for my sign to walk on and off we went. I sticked to follow the trail on both leads and rode her for 10min. It was very uneventfull - very much to my taste. I have to be really watchfull with my movements though. If I shift my weight she is turning and she absolutely does not like it when I get of my balance point and pinches her ears back. She is just really sensitive to whatever I do.
For the weekend I have planed a playday with Patricia and on Sunday I might go with Anita to help a friend of hers with a Lippizzaner. Her friend seems to be interested in Parelli :).

liberty 30min, online 10min, walk 20min
Plan B today cause the ridinghouse was busy with freejumping. I sneaked in on Malin´s lunchbreak though and played with Milva.
At liberty we played with weave patterns. The first few times it went great and she was very responsive but then she got bored and started to ignore me. She still walked with me though but didn´t think weaving was so important. I played with something different then and when I came back to the weave pattern she was with me again.
We also played with figure 8s again. I´m still fascinated over that she really follows my suggestions. I mean she could leave any time but she still stays and actually puts effort in the different tasks. Amazing!
Close range circles weren´t that close today but she still circled at liberty - another very fascinating thing for me!!
Then we played stick to me over the little fences from the freejumping course. I lowered them alot for Milva - and for me. She is very elegant when she dressages over them. She is deffinitely no jumping horse ;). We went over them in walk and trott.
Online we played with a figure 8s at trott. I haven´t done that for a while and want to prepare her for doing it at liberty.
Undemanding time after our playsession for 1 hour and then we took a 20min walk down the dirtroad. Walking away from the stable I walked in z3 and going home she walked behind me - her choice. She was totally relaxed today even thoug it was blowing quiet a bit. She walked with her head down all the time and stopped on the slightest suggestion. We even had some snuggle time while being on our mission. Usually she doesn´t have time for that cause there are other things to do when we are outside.
The touch-it game is well ankered in her brain cause as soon as she spots some garbage or strange looking things outside she is straight walking towards them and sniffing them - looking at me if I can see her being such a good girl. If I don´t offer her a cookie for it she puts whatever she found in her mouth to make a point and if it is something she can´t put in her mouth - like a big stone she paws it.
Too funny!
Will see if I get ot ride her this week.

7 Balances Of Life by Pat Parelli

The 7 Balances of life.

Everything you do comes from your heart.

In your first 48 years you have lived one lifecircel. After that you start your second.

No 1. Passion.

Follow your passion.

Some people have a passion but then 'life happens'and you let go of that passion.

No 2. Dedication.

Some people have dreams and passion but don't do anything about it.

No 3. Health.

Don't run your life at 10.000 miles/hour.

To listen to your body and have a good health is important.

Ballance 1 and 2 with 3.

No 4. Spirtuality.

What ever you think is 'out there'... And belive in.

No 5. Family.

..is any one who You will truly support and will support You. Not meaning genetic family.

No 6. Finance.

'There is no romance without finance...'

You have to have your finances in order.

No 7. Fun

You must have some fun, it is not just about work.

Make a list of allthe things YOU are Passionated about. An what YOU think are FUN.

To remind your self. Sometimes when you have some time over or want to do something fun, look at that list to remind yourself.

If you can have all 7 of these in balance - there is where you want to go.

thanks for sharing Sofie and Elisabeth!!

Chosen By A Horse Forever written by Susan Richards

If you just buy one book a year and not like me several a month, and if you would ask me which one I would recommend, I would tell you to get one of Susan Richard´s books. Good books are like friends, they are hard to find and when well found they deserve all the appreciation they can get. Susan´s books are like those rare friends. In my case they went straight into my heart. And because her books are like friends you want to meet them again and again. Her books I´m going to read over and over again.
Actually I think I´m going to write her an emal to thank her for taking the time to write such wonderful books.

Busy Saturday

20min online, walk with 7 games
I took Milva with me for my little arrends this morning, like getting the waterhose from the trying room. While going in the room I ground tied her outside and she waited patiently for me - also when I used the bathroom and when I got a bucket of oats for her. I think she enjoyed our little trips and while walking around the barn I played all 7 games with her.
I think most of the other boarders are used to see her "parked" somewhere by now.
I haven´t planned anything for tomorrow yet cause Sunday mornings there are usually dressage trainings and also I´m picking up Shawn and Johan from the airport after work tonight. Who knows when we get home...

Friday, March 18, 2011

Finally watched all episodes from the Horseman´s Apprentice. I never got to watch it online because of my old laptop being sick. It was fun to have a sneak peak behind the curtains and even though it´s not ment to be an instructional DVD I learned a few valuable things by watching it.
15min liberty, 20min online
At liberty we played with figure 8s again, sideways away and towards me, mirror me - my idea was that Milva would mirror my steps and take one step back when I do, we have to play a bit more with that though.
Online we played with transitions again. I got a nice trot - canter transitions and before she could break gait I asked her for a downward transitions and stoped after that.

And Canter...

60min online, 10min liberty
30 min walk down the dirtroad and around the stable. Watching some more Savvy club DVDs made me realize that I´m far away from being provocative. On a scale from 1 - 10, 10 being the highest, I´m probably a 3. But that´s going to change!
While taking Milva for a walk I played all 7 games with her. Which was new and I have no idea why I didn´t think about that earlier. Dah!
We also played touch-it alot. It´s actuallly more her idea to play touch-it. She likes to sniff all kinds of things.
For friendly game I used a bit of plastic she found and touched her with it all over her body. Suddenly our walk was not so dramatic either because she concentrated more on me instead of making up her own ghost stories.
I had to wait a bit before entering the ridinghouse cause one of the horses got video taped for a customer. While I talked to Malin I had my back turned to Milva and when I turned around she stood with her frontlegs on the stonepedestal looking at me and making a cookieface. Hahahaha, such a smart girl! Everything for a cookie, ey.
In the ridinghouse I started to play at liberty with figure 8s, standing farther away. Milva put on her liberty face and put in effort :).
Then we played with more circling game on the 45´. Lots of change of direction and transitions and taking it slooow in the beginning. She prefers to go on the left lead and I just watched one Savvy Club DVD where Pat mentioned that most horses do. Keeping that in mind I asked her to canter on the left lead today. She gave me two nice trot - canter transitions on phase 1 but didn´t keep up the cantering for more than 5,6 strides. I´m still very pleased though, thinking about Rom and how long it took to build it.

Susan Richards, Saddled: How a Spirited Horse Reined Me In and Set Me Free

Saddled by Susan Richards

This is a memoir about the restorative gifts from taking care of an animal — the importance of constancy, the beauty of quiet, steadfast love, the way loving a good (and sometimes bad!) animal can keep you going. And it's a wonderful story for Susan's (and Georgia's) fans, and for anyone who has ever loved an animal enough to keep on living
An extra ordinary example of how people can change their patterns. I totally love Susan´s books and hope she is going to write more!

Riding Linafina

25min online 10min liberty with Milva, 30min freestyle on Lina Figure 8s and stick to me at liberty. Circling game on the 45', lots of transitions and change of direction. She was very responsive today and really put effort in it. I asked her to canter twice. The first time she was airborne again so I started to buck around as well. Her was face was priceless! The second time she gave me a nice transition but kept an eye on me in case I flip out again. She is so hilarious. I rode on Paulina for 30 minutes, freestyle in walk, trot and canter. I used my NP and it was my first real ride in it in all three gates. I'm so glad I bought it! It's very natural to sit on your balance point on it. I have to shorten my stirrups a bit though the next time. Surprisingly I could ride Lina just with my weight without touching the reins, too cool! I didn't expect that of her really. Also she loved the saddle, she was moving with very long strides and blowing out air alots and she had a positive expression on her face all the time. While riding I concentrated on my balance point and experimented with different postures - to sit wrong and right. It was interesting to see lina' s reaction when sitting on and off the balance point. I watched the rest of the success serie DVD 's. And last night I was up to three o clock in the morning watching clips in the savvy vault. Can't believe my four days off are already over!

Spring walk

Just a short update. It's not so much fun to type on the iPhone. On the weekend I played with Milva online and on liberty. Our circling game is definitely improving. Liberty figure 8s are going good as well. Circling didn't work so well in the beginning so I took her online again and when that worked we went back to liberty. What she did was going back in a big circle around me instead of going forwards. She is such a clown and has me all worked out. Today we went for a 70min!!! walk with Marie and Linafina. Lina lives with Milva in the same pasture and she is the second in rank and very cool, totally reliable and the perfect leadhorse. We walked a big round - obviously cause it took 70 min. We walked by alot of houses and farms and on the way home we had to walk on the asphalt street and we meet lots of cars. Milva didn't care though. What she didn't like though was walking in the deep acre there she went rb for a bit. She really doesn't like deep footing. Otherwise she was pretty cool. She sniffed lots of garbage on the way and made her cookieface because she touched it. Too funny! I'm really proud of her that she did so well!

Long Weekend

Finally 4 days off again. I had so many extra shifts and weekends I "owned" people because I switched with them last year that I didn´t have my well deserved 4 days off since the New Year. It feels like I have been at work constantly. I know,I shouldn´t complain because with my schedule I have it better than most people. Who else has twice a month a mini vacation?
This afternoon I´m going to drive Shawn and Johan
to Kastrup. They are going to the Italian Alps for a skitrip. I´m going to pick them up again in a week. Unfortunatelly the laptop is travelling with Shawn because he has to do some studying. Let´s see if I survive a week without internet - except when I´m at work of course.
I have a full schedule for the next days anyway. I´m going to finish watching the Success series and the Horsman´s Apprentice, work on some knots and play and hopefully ride Milva alots and study some theory.

More AWWW Moments

30 min playtime, 15min liberty, 15min online
Milva blew me away at liberty again today. For a warm up we did stick to me over 4 cavalettis, which were build up in a circle. Then I asked her to squeeze over, disengaged her and sent her again. Her face expression at liberty is priceless! She is so darn cute with her concentrated face.
I also asked her to figure 8. I noticed though that I used my bodylanguage way too much in the beginning. Luckily Linda made a short visit to my brain and I remembered what she said at the Liberty dvd - liberty is the same as online just with the rope off. And see there, Milva continued to do figure 8s without me micromanaging her. It just takes so little I really really have to remember that!!!
Before going over to online I asked her for liberty circle with walk - stop transitions. Liberty circles are the most amazing thing for me.
Online we played with more circling on the 45´rope. More walk - trott - walk - stop transitions and change of direction.

Chosen By A Horse written by Susan Richards

How a broken horse fixed a broken heart

When Susan Richards agrees to take on one of the abused horses just rescued by the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a new chapter opens in her turbulent life. Caring for this astonishingly trusting creature, she begins a relationship that will change her view of the world.
Susan Richards lost her mother at the age of five and was raised by uncaring relatives; married unhappily and divorced, she had also become an alcoholic. At forty-three, she found herself living with just horses for company: the diva-like Georgia, boyish Tempo and hopeless romantic, Hotshot. While Susan is vainly attempting to capture the rescued horse assigned to her, a skeletal mare called Lay Me Down walks into the horse trailer of her own volition. Susan takes her home, and this broken and badly treated animal proves to her that trust is not just for dreamers.

Beautifully-written, poignant, and often sharply funny, this memoir is an inspiring must-read for anyone who has ever loved a horse, and anyone who has ever lost their way in life.

Susan Richards has a BA in English from the University of Colorado and a Master of Social Work degree from Adelphi University. She lives in Olivebridge, New York, with three dogs, two cats and four horses.

One of the books still from my february bookorder. I haven´t order any books for march yet but I´m working on it.
Back to the book. I had it in the shelf for a few days before I started reading it. To be honest I bought it because I liked the title and the cover but didn´t read any reviews about it.
Well people, the only thing I can say about this book - go out and buy it. It´s one of the most heartwarming book I ever read.

Movie Time

The Seven Games at Liberty

This is Disc Six of Ten in the Success Series DVD Set.

One of the most fun and fascinating things you can do with a horse is play with no strings attached, from having them stick with you all the way up to flying changes, spins, passage and more.

Run time: 1 hour 17 minutes

Beyond the Round Pen Details

•Why round pen training has often ruined more horses than it has helped
•Why playing with horses at Liberty is less about technique and more about relationship
•The importance of teaching on a line before testing at Liberty
•How the Parelli Seven Games helps you teach a horse anything you want him to learn
•Know the specific "Zones" on a horse that help transform your training and communication
•How to orchestrate "drive" and "draw" when playing at Liberty
•How to have your horse want to play with you and not lose his enthusiasm

I was just one hour in the stable today. The weather was just miserable, snowrain and windy and the ridinghouse was occupied by Malin´s dressagetrainer. Definitely not the right time to go in there with Milva.
I thoroughly mucked out the stable, took in Orkan and Lina for the ferrier and gave Tinker and Milva a second breakfast in our stable. I thought it would be nice for them to eat inside without getting thrown out by the two others all the time.
When I came home I watched the Liberty dvd from the Success series - definitely one of my favourites so far!

Liberty - The Truth

Once more Milva just blew me away. I so underestimate her. Just imagine how far she would be in the hands of a Parelli Professional.
Yesterday we played 20min online and 10min at liberty. I asked her to do figure 8s at liberty and just needed to use a light phase 1 for sending her and she continued to do her task with me just standing there. Awesomeness!
Our circling game is improving too now. I think we finally had a breakthrough the other day and she even puts on a lovely face now and then. She still can be snotty but hey, Rom wasn´t built in one day.
She gave me nice walk - trott - stop transitions so I decided to switch back to the 45´rope and it was the same there.
Today I started with liberty again. My routines got a bit messed up today because Sjune cleaned out the last turn out stable today - he cleaned out the second one yesterday. Usually I start my day with undemanding time with Milva while she is eating her extra hay outside and I groom her and give her scratches before we start playing. But because of Sjune working there I decided to take her to the ridinghouse. On top of that I forgot my ropes at home and just had the 45´rope in the stable and the featherlines.
I started with figure 8s at liberty again and Milva was just superb! I think she likes liberty too because she really pays attention to me and tries to please me so hard. Totally love my pony!
Then I asked her to yoyo back at liberty and to circle me. That was our debut with circles at liberty. First she stayed pretty close to me until I asked her to make the circles a bit bigger and then she used half of the ridinghouse. I asked her for walk - stop - walk transitions and her reaction was awesome. I just needed to switch the carrot stick to whoa hand and she stopped looking at me. Super smart pony!!
I also played some more with the circling game on the 45´rope. Milva likes to use the whole rope which is good. We played with some change of direction and walk - stop transitions and finished with some trotting circles. Her trott was nice today too. She had her head down and kept her rythm, ears forwards. She also gave me some nice trott - walk transitions and even offered trott a few times.
Like Linda is always saying, take it slow with a lbi and then they start offering more.
Milva looked totally rideable today but I didn´t had a saddle on her and no time because I have to work in the afternoon. Time, time, time....

Spring Clean Out

Sjune and I have been cleaning out the turnout stable today. It took 4 hours without any break to get everything done. We started at 8.00am and were done at 12.00pm. It feels good though and the horses sure liked their new bedding. Most could be done by tractor but it was millimeter work to turn around in the stable. The corners and the fine cleaning up needed to be done by hand though. I´m sure going to feel my back and neck tomorrow.
After the cleaning out I drove quick home to eat lunch and gave Shawn a ride to school and then I went back to the stable and played with Milva.
I did lots of friendly game with my foot in the stirrup and laying on her back while Milva was eating her hay.
30min online in the ridinghouse, she didn´t look rideable throughout the whole playsession though so I choose not to get on her today. She even went right brain extrovert because of Malin salting the ridinghouse. With the right approach I could get her rather quick to left brain again but I still thought it was not safe to ride. Tomorrow maybe.

Milva ground tied while I turn down our playground,dec.2010
20min online
Today something magical happened. You know when you read and hear about putting your heart in your hand in then touch your horse with it and it is not about the task and be in focus and be there for your horse and don´t do it to your horse but for your horse and take the time it takes and have a plan and visualize, you know all that Pat Parelli is always saying.
I know all that in my brain but somehow have a hard time to put it into practise.
Before I went to sleep last night I planned our playsession today and pictured different situations and thought about what to do about it.
Milva is still in heat so I don´t want to pull any trigger but instead be there for her and respect her mood. I still wanted to play though - but sooooft and sloooow.
I don´t know how to describe it but it was just a different feeling today. I focused on our relationship and I could feel that I was there for her and time didn´t exist. I just was.
Suddenly everything fall in place and our circling game was a game and not a task. Everything felt so easy and soft. I barely had to use phase 1, just a very soft phase 1 and her expression was soft all the time. Her head was down and one ear was always turned towards me. When I asked her to trott I just had to bring up my energy, no pointing with my finger or touching the carrot stick not even a clicking with the tongue. It was just wow. For the downwards transitions I just had to change the carrot stick in my other hand and she slowed down. In trott she slowed down to walk and looked at me, wondering if I ment she should walk or stop.
Now I just have to try to recall that feeling for the next time.

Little Baby Milva & Her Mum Madeleine

What a cute little munschkin Milva was - she still is the cutest just not so little anymore. Found those two pictures on her breeders homepage, year 2005.

8th Ride

8th ride on Milva today and it didn´t go too well. There were different factors that didn´t match up so well. First of all Milva is in heat and acting according to it. My experience from last year is that the first few heats she is in are more intense and then over the summer it gets less again.
She was really antzy today. As always when I do the stablechores I have her loose outside where she can eat her hay but as soon as I turned my back to her today she went straigt to Dupont - Helene´s gelding, and flirted with him intensively. Usually I disengage her hindquarters and she follows back with me at liberty but today I actually had to get her cause she happily ignored me. But I understand her, Dupont is a good looking boy ;).
When I came to the ridinghouse Milva got herself worked up over Sune who put salt in the ridinghouse so it wouldn´t dust so much. Wonder how that affects the hooves though. It took a while for her to get leftbrain again. When she is in heat she is even more drama queen than usual so after today I decided not to ride her when she is like that and take her for a relaxing walk instead or just hang out with her.
After the warmup Helene helped me on the ground. I asked her to lead me today and went in the pushing passenger position. When I started to relax after a while and took a big sigh so did Milva. But it just wasn´t fun today whith her being tensed and irritated, there was no harmony between us. She wasn´t right brain when I sat on her otherwise I would have jumped off and taken care of it but it still felt wrong.
I´m working my 5 days now and my plan is to take her for a daily walk - if the weather permits it, with the saddle on, work on our cirlcing game and concentrate on trott - walk - stop transitions and I also want to work on mounting but I won´t ride her until she is out of heat, so maybe by Monday.
