Ferrier & Longreining

I had Helene N. out yesterday to trim Milva´s hooves again. Well, what can I say - Milva still doesn´t like her and is turning into a dragon as soon as she lays eyes on her.
I just don´t know what to do about it. She doesn´t give me any troubles ever with her hooves. I can pick all four of them up from one side and can do whatever with them.
Another ferrier is simply not an option because I want to have the best one available and that´s Helene N.
We had already decided in advance to give her tranquilizers. Milva was never needleshy before but we had to bring her into the stable, into a box to give her the needle. And even in the box she didn´t want Helene N. to come close to her. But after a short little while it worked and she was standing still.
Luckily Milva´s hooves are very strong and healthy according to Helene N. I´m also really greateful that she is so patient with my little dragon. I really wonder what got into Milva.
Shawn thinks it´s because I don´t let anyone else handle or touch Milva and that´s why she doesn´t want to be touched or handled by anyone else - except Shawn and auntie Anita.
Well I don´t know. It did cross my mind to do a ferrier course so I could trim Milva´s hooves by myself but I can´t even file my nails so I think trimming Milva´s hooves is a bit to far over my head for me.
On the positive side - longreining was going well and we did walk - trott - stop transitions. Now if only I would be in a better shape so I could keep up with Milva´s long strides.

  4. I'm glad to hear your long reining is going well! Regarding the farrier... I would listen to my horse, but that's just PPO, Petra's Personal Opinion :-)

  5. I would also listen to my horse... sometimes you think you do the best for them, but they think different and tell you that it isn't ;)

It's a good idea to get her used to being handled from other people. In the beginning when I bought Sunny I didn't want to let anyone touch her for different reasons (maybe I was jealous, maybe she was just MINE, maybe I was afraid that someone could do something wrong...) and I wouldn't NEVER EVER have allowed anyone to ride her ;)

But I saw that it was important to learn to trust other people and TO TRUST YOUR HORSE.
Now I allow many people to ride her because I trust Sunny.
With "trust" I don't mean that I trust her that she wouldn't cause any trouble to the rider - I trust her, that it's ok for her being ridden by another person and that she's mentally ok with that, also if the rider is a beginner.

Maybe some stuff to think about?

Petra - I agree with "listen to your horse" but someone has to trim her hooves. Sure she didn´t make problems with the other ferriers but in my opinion they were just not doing a good enough job.
Caro - yeah, I would allow another Parelli person to handle Milva but definitely no one who is not doing Parelli. Which excludes 99% of the people around here. And when it comes to riding - same there. I would allow another Parelli person to ride her but for sure no one else.

  7. Oh and I would never ever allow a beginner to ride or sit on my horse ;). But that´s just how I am.

  8. so I gave it some thought - to let someone else or a beginner ride my horse. in my case, that someone else would defintelly have to be another parelli person in a higher level. i would never let a beginner ride my horse. that would be the same as putting a sunday driver in a formel 1 car.
but i agree that it would be wise to let milva get handled by some other parelli persons just to get her used to other people.

  10. I chose to trim my horses myself. After a year their feet are healthy and looking better than ever... Just couldn't find anybody that treated my horses the way I wanted to AND that did a good job... I would not suggest for everybody to do the same, lots of mistakes can be made.... If you have a farrier you like and does a good job, that's worth a lot :-)

  11. I agree Sofie :)))
I´m thought about triming myself Petra but I just don´t dare to do it.
Well, we will see. Maybe Milva is changing her mind about Helene one day and until then she just has to get some tranquilizers. It´s not ideal but not much I can do about it.
And because she never gives me any trouble it´s kind of hard to train her - or well, the training would have to be with Helene but I can´t pay Helene to come out and spend some time with Milva - she is a veterinary as well and that would be rather expensive.

  12. Can't you ask the people at your barn if they would help you to get Milva used to being handled by others (especially her feets?) You could also stay with her while they pick up her feets - maybe that would help?
I would give it a try!

  13. i thought about that Caro :). But that won´t help much because the people I would ask like Anita and Patricia know Milva and Milva knows them so I don´t see much problem there.
And I would never ever allow anyone to handle her or her feet when I´m not there - except for the two people above.
And I would never allow a non-Parelli person to handle her.
What I think is that Milva doesn´t like H. because she is also a vet and therefor smells like danger. It just takes some time for my sensible horse to get used to her and for so long she will get tranquilizers.
I don´t see any reason nor point in getting her used to be handled by other people - except Parelli people of course. I don´t let a non Parelli person screw up my horse!
